Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1938 ford deluxe, vibration problems, car mechanic

Question
I just inherited a 1938 Ford Deluxe 2-door sedan. This car was completely refurbished about 10 years ago,but has only been driven about 2-3 times per year. Anyway, the car seems to run ok, shifts fine, etc., however, when you get up to about 35-40 miles per hour it groans, vibrate.

Any ideas.

Answer
Hello Dennis,

A groaning '38..............do we need to consider an exorcist?  Just kidding, vibration problems are always challenging but you be on your way with a few simple tests:

A) Run the car up to the speed it groans and vibrates and hold a steady speed. Test 1: Push in the clutch and let the car coast. Does the vibration go away or continue? If it goes away, the problem is external to the engine (axles, tires, wheels etc.) If the vibration continues, then the engine should be condsidered.

B) As you can see, there can be a multiplicty of reasons for vibration so you need patience yourself and/or a competant old car mechanic to help you diagnose the problem.Suggest joining you local Early Ford V-8 Club for references to good mechanics or do-it-yourselfers, club knowledge experts on your yeear car not to mention help in getting this car back on the road!

Best of luck,

Bob
