Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spur, rolls royce silver spur, signal relays

Question
I read a message you wrote to an owner where the wipers wont stop when in the off position. I have 1 relay pulled but naturally no windshield wipers if I need them. Switch is ok, switched around the relays with no luck.

You referred to relays on your other message so are the 5 relays the only ones on this system or is there another one. Could be the switch but what have you learned. I am pretty savvy on remove and replace but there probably is a common problem. As I said, I checked the operation of the switch and with all the relays plugged in, it works in all positions but wont shut off.
Thanks

Answer
It sounds like your relay is sticking in the ON position. OR the connections to the relay may need replacing. If the wires are arcing, the relay isn't getting enough current to dis-engage. However, your relay could be bad. I went through 4 turn-signal relays before I found one that would work more than a few months. These relays are the old technology, as they work with low voltage current applied to a thin strip of conductive metal that engages when low voltage current is applied. Not a very reliable way to operate a relay. Any change in voltage will cause the relay to malfunction or become damaged.

1. Check the relay connections & voltage.
2. Test the battery. A weak cell in the battery will cause all kinds of problem.
