Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1950 Chevy pickup, replacement fuel tanks, submersible fuel pump

Question
QUESTION: My friend is restoring a 1950 Chevy pickup. The engine has been replaced by a V6 from a 1990 C10. My question is this: we have to replace the gas tank, which contains a submersible fuel pump. How can we find a replacement fuel pump with the proper flow rate? And can the replacement be placed elsewhere than in the gas tank? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

ANSWER: Are you using the computer, wiring, and fuel injection system that was stock on the 1990 S-10?
Let me know, it makes a big difference.

QUESTION: Thank you very much for your response. You now know you're not talking to a pro, right? My friend said he is keeping the computer system from the C10 (maybe he does mean S10, I know very little about trucks)- that is, unless you have any ideas or suggestions to make it more practical or easier to accomplish. Would an older, non-computerized engine be easier? Thanks again.

Answer
It is my opinion the keeping the computer controls and fuel injection is a great idea as the finished result will be a better running package. The following web site lists replacement fuel tanks for the 1950 truck. http://www.tanks-to-pans.com/site/823208/page/314684
I would check a magazine called "Street Rodder" www.streetrodderweb.com/
as they have advertisers that sell all the products to make this conversion.
Now, if the engine is equipped with throttle body fuel injection then you will need a fuel pump that will deliver 14 pounds per square inch of pressure but if the engine has ported fuel injection then the pump needs to be able to pump 60 PSI.
Here is another company that sells street rod fuel tanks and pumps. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Street-Rod-Fuel-Tanks.html.
The 1950 Chevrolet had the fuel tank mounted in the cab behind the front seat. I would suggest mounting the tank under the truck using one of the tanks from a Hot Rod supplier. Mounting the fuel pump in the tank is the best bet as the gas in the tank around the pump keeps it cool making it last longer.
Good Luck
