Classic/Antique Car Repair: RR silver shadow 1. power steering box, poor excuse, shadow 1

Question
Hi. I have a 1975 Shadow 1. The power steering box leaks from the top plate. Everything is fine until u turn the steering wheel to the right then when its on full lock and the pressure starts to build it begins to leak. Turn the wheel to the left on full lock everything is ok.Ive removed the top plate, fitted a new O ring/locating plate in between the steering box and the top plate... Screwed the top plate down on the end float adjustment shaft then tightened all four bolts in seqence to a torque of aprox 60 lb sq/in but still leaks in exactly the same place on rh down..... and unless my eyes are deceiving me when the steering wheel is hard to the right its as if the pressure is trying to lift the plate up a fraction....Remember though if the steering wheel is in any other position it will not leak..... Please help. Many thanks,Andy Gent

Answer
Hello Andy the O ring you replaced is needed in a reseal of course but that is not the immediate issue. the valves within the box that release the pressure when the wheel reaches full lock is the problem. this will require the rebuilding of the box, they are stout units and there should not be a need to replace internals just a thorough cleaning and reseal will do the trick, the setup for proper tolerances is crucial and not for the do it yourself person due to special tools needed. if you are handy with tools and it sounds to me like you are you can remove the box yourself and a competent rebuilder / or shop ( find an old school technician ) not the poor excuse kids that you find in jiffy quicky places. and have the work performed correctly. where are you located? if you were near Fort Lauderdale Florida I would be happy to serve you with this. Best regards JM
