Classic/Antique Car Repair: car will not run unless choke is out, loose bolts, warm ups

Question
i have a 1954 chevy with a straight six 235 that will only run with the choke out what should i do i have changed the plugs points and wires

Answer
Hi Bill:
The choke reduces air in the intake manifold, which causes
more fuel into the engine for quick starts and warm ups. If
you can not run without the choke out, you most likely have
developed a air leak in the intake manifold, which means too much
air is getting to the engine, which will cause the plugs to
fire, not combust and the car will eventually cut off.

Check around the intake and carb for cracks, breaks, loose bolts, etc.
Eventually the leak will get so bad that it won't run with the
choke out either.
