Classic/Antique Car Repair: RR Corniche 81 Transmission, mechanical lever, electric switch

Question
Hi Jorge, Hope you can assist in diagnosis of a transmission problem with an '81 RR Corniche.  The vehicle has been parked for 4 months and when started the trans failed to go into gear, any gear, neutral, drive, reverse,  the lever moves, no response.  Is there an easy solution?  I need to move the vehicle quickly to another garage.  Thanks!

Answer
Hello Debby I am sorry to inform you that the Issue lies in the electric motor or the selector that actually performs the selected gear change. you see when you select a gear on your Rolls you are really just operating an electric switch unlike most lesser cars where the gear shift selector is a direct mechanical lever into the transmission so your effort performs the shift . In your Rolls the selector is an electric switch that tells the gear shift motor to engage the selected gear, that's why the shift selector has a very light effortless feel. bottom line is the problem is electrical either in the shifter or the gear change motor below the car next to the transmission none of which are quick or easy fixes. if I may ask what state are you located?
