Classic/Antique Car Repair: 63 Bel Air, silicone spray, cold weather

Question
I have a 63 Bel Air 4dr. All stock with a 3 speed on the column. In the summer I have no problem shifting, but during the winter time I have trouble going from reverse/first to second/third. The difficulty is based on how cold it is outside. I never have any trouble going from reverse to first or second to third. How can I make it change gears easier. If it matters, I live in Kansas and it never gets lower that -5 degrees outside.

Answer
Hi Sam:
There is grease in the shifting column, which most likely
stiffen up during the winter cold, which would make it harder
to shift. A silicone spray would work better in cold weather. Get
a can of silicone spray and spray some inside the shifting column area.
