Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1971 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, pierburg fuel pump, rolls royce silver shadow

Question
Hi Vern, I have a 1971 Silver Shadow that when I go to start it, it sounds like it wants to kick over but doesn't. Then you get the smell of fuel, and eventually get a small puddle under the car. Is something clogging the fuel line? Someone told me it was the carbs being closed?

Answer
Hi Michael:
Seen this problem before...If the hydraulic lifters in the carb
is sticking, it will dump fuel through the overflow. Hopefully
your carbs don't need a rebuild.

I'm assuming you fill the carbs with motor oil every time you change
the engine oil? If not, they are most likely bone dry. If you have never
done this before, let me know.

Also, a second caused could be the fuel pump. If you are running with the
original Pierburg fuel pump, it may be going bad. Many times you will hear a
loud hum for the fuel pump, located under the rear axle.

Also, when starting her, do NOT press the accelerator. This will only flood
her.
