Classic/Antique Car Repair: oil leak, Leak at dip stick tube

Question
Hi
Started to restore about 5 cars and have not finished one yet. Here I go again. I recently picked up a 1962 Chevy II that is mostly original. It has a 230 6 cyl. The problem is the oil is leaking around the dip stick tube where it enters the block. Is there an O-ring or gasket on the tube and how do I remove the tube without causing damage to it.
Also what is the esiest way to confirm if this engine is original.
Thanks for your help. This is a great service please keep it up.

Answer
The oil shouldn't be that high, unless you are going around corners too fast, or parking on a slant.

The tube will pull out, you may have to wiggle it a little bit, but you should be able to get it to come out.   Clean off the inside of the hole and the end of the tube, then coat it with sealant (I use "Ultra-Copper" in a tube at the auto parts store), follow the directions about putting it on and waiting a while to allow it to absorb moisture from the air before re-inserting the tube, and then don't disturb it for 24 hours.  That should cure the leak.

The 230 didn't come out until 1964, so your car couldn't have come with that engine.
