Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1959 Cadillac leaking petrol, Carb kit source

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1959 Cadillac, 62 seres, carburetor carter afr, dd9 2815 secondary and primary throttle shaft leak choke side and passenger side.
I have a bad petrol leak and cannot find where it is coming from, could you give me some advise please.? Many thanks Bill

ANSWER: Your carburetor should be a Carter AFB, tag number 3177S, or else a Rochester 4GC, tag number 7016101.  Perhaps someone has changed the carburetor on your car, or else you may have mis-read the markings on it (or possibly my books are wrong, but that is unlikely).

Regardless of which carburetor is on the car, it should not leak fuel, of course.  If the fuel is coming out around the throttle shaft, the primary side throttle body is flooded with fuel - the only way this can happen is if the float bowl is overflowing, or else an idle jet has fallen out of it's socket.  In either case, the carburetor needs to be taken apart for inspection and repair. If you are used to doing this job, or want to learn how, first buy a kit for the carburetor, then sit down and study the diagrams and directions, and see if you can rebuild it yourself.

If there are serious worn out or damaged parts in your carburetor, don't waste your time and money on it, just buy a replacement carburetor - Edlebrock has bought the old Carter tooling for the AFB and they are making excellent replacements for old AFBs - these are available from Summitt Racing, Performance Automotive Warehouse, and other parts dealers.  The AFB is one of the best, most trouble free carburetors ever made - and the newly manufactured ones are excellent.  You do have to tell the parts man what year and model your car is, because you may also have to buy a linkage adaptor, and you will have to hook up the electrically assisted choke - but that is very simple to do.

Good luck!

QUESTION: Hi Dick, Many thanks for your email. It must have changed by the previous owner. My problem now is to find a rebuild kit in the uk. I am able to do work on the car so will do it myself.
Kind regards
Bill

Answer
If you are unable to find a rebuilding kit in the UK, you can contact Jon Hargrove's "The Carburetor Shop" in Eldon, Missouri, USA. They are the best source of kits in the US.

Of course you will have to identify your carburetor to them to get the right kit.

Good luck!

That car must be a real sight on the narrow roads in Merry Old England!
