Classic/Antique Car Repair: 49 Fargo brakes, Dodge truck brakes

Question
I have rebuilt the front brakes on my 49 Fargo FM-108. How do I adjust the brake shoe pivots without the factory setting tool?

Answer
I'm very sorry not to be able to help.  Fargo is not a brand I am familiar with - it was not sold in the US, and trucks are not in my repairing experience either.

I think the Fargo is probably very similar to the Dodge truck of the same year (but that is only a guess on my part), and if so, the shop manual for a '49 Dodge truck of the same weight rating should be helpful in understanding what the various adjustments in the braking system are for - and give you some idea how to devise a way to make a tool if one cannot be fabricated by modifying some standard tool. The shop manual will have a good picture of the tool you need, - chances are it is pretty simple to make.  Shop manuals for most vehicles are readily available from the various automotive literature dealers - start by finding out which Dodge truck matches most closely with what you have, then a contact one of the literature dealers to see if you can find a manual.  I use Ed Faxon at www.faxonautolit.com but there are many others out there.

Brake shoe pivots are present to position the two brake shoes such that the linings are concentric with the inner surface of the drum when the brakes are fully applied - but I don't know the exact specifications or procedure for your vehicle.
