Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1938 Pontiac 6 cyl, Stalling on turns

Question
My pontiac stalls when I take a right or left turn. Takes about 20 minutes to restart the car.

Answer
Two possibilities come to mind - the first is that the float level is set too high in your carburetor, and gas is slopping over into the intake manifold flooding it during a turn.  If you see black smoke out the tailpipe when it does restart, or if you smell gasoline under the hood after this happens, that is probably the cause.  To cure this, the carburetor must be adjusted properly - buy the kit and follow the directions.  Also, smell your oil dipstick - you may have contaminated the oil with the excess gasoline - if so, change the oil immediately - this can be very dangerous, in addition to causing excessive wear in the engine.

The other possibility is that you have a bad radiator cap, and water is coming out the top of the radiator, hitting the fan and thus flooding the head, shorting out the spark plugs.  This would be pretty obvious when you open the hood after it stalls - there will be water around each spark plug.

I'm assuming the 20 minute period without starting is because the engine won't run, but that it does crank on the starter normally.  If that is NOT the case,I'm on the wrong trail here, so write back and I'll see if I can come up with a reason for not cranking that heals itself in 20 minutes.   Strange!
