Classic/Antique Car Repair: broken antenna mast, Antenna mast source

Question
Hi-I'm working on a 57 Studebaker with dual antennas. On one side the mast is OK but there is no wire attached. On the other side, the mast is broken off. Where would I go to find a replacement mast- (I realize I might not find an exact replacement and have to replace both) And how does the cable connect to the mast?

Answer
I'm guessing these are rear antennas, right?

On my 57, the rear antenna on one side is a dummy - there is no wire on it, it was there simply for appearance sake.  My car is a 57 Packard, but they shared bodies and most accessory items with Studebaker in that year, so I suspect your car is the same.

There are many suppliers of parts for Studebakers - the best source of info on these suppliers is the Studebaker Driver's Club - in my opinion, one of the best single brand clubs in the hobby.  If you are going to be involved with this car, I strongly urge you to join our group.  Contact them at www.studebakerdriversclub.com

Looking at the latest issue of the club magazine, I see ads from SASCO (www.studeparts.com), Studebakers West (www.studebakerswest.net), Studebaker International (www.studebaker-intl.com) and many others.

Antenna masts are hard to find - but I would start with those three vendors and see what they suggest - they may refer you to other sources.

The other possibility is to examine the replacement antennas available at your local auto parts stores - you may find a pair that looks close enough that you could use them as replacement antennas for your car.

Good luck with the car - it's a rare one!
