Classic/Antique Car Repair: window motor replacement, Window regulator removal

Question
Hi. I removed a window motor on a 1957 Cadillac mod 62. What a mistake! How or where can I find info on how to re-install a new motor. The whole assembly came apart and appears to have been spring loaded some way. I do have the other door to look at, but it's hard to see in there too. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Phil

Answer
OUCH!  You are a very lucky guy if you were not injured doing this job.  Someone should have warned you and given you instructions - people have lost fingers taking these mechanisms apart.

The only way to get it back together is to remove the whole window lift mechanism (called the regulator) from the door, wind up the lift assist spring so that it is in the "glass down" position, clamp it that way with vise grip pliers or in a vise, and then install the motor back into the assembly.  Then you can release the clamps and the motor will resist the spring pressure while you re-install the mechanism in the door.

If this is your car, and you are going to do the maintenance yourself, I advise you to get a factory shop manual for the car - it will give you step by step directions for this and all other maintenance you will need. It will save you thousands of dollars over the years.  The automotive literature dealers have these in stock - I use Ed Faxon at www.faxonautolit.com -but there are many other good ones out there.

Good luck, and be careful with that spring!
