Classic/Antique Car Repair: Band adjustment, 58 impala, adjustment screw

Question
I have a "58" Impala with the cast iron powerglide transmission. Is there a simple way to check for correct band adjustment on the outside of the transmission case?

Answer
The low band adjustment screw is on the left side of the transmission case. Loosen the lock nut and tighten the adjustment screw to 5 to 7 foot pounds of torque. Then back the screw off 3 complete turns and tighten the lock nut. Make sure that you back off the adjustment screw exactly 3 turn, make and count do not guess. The reverse band requires partial dis assembly of the transmission and is not that easy.
