i would like to find out the color & what it was like when it was new?

You don't say what exact model it is, so I can't be real specific here, but look around under the hood, on the firewall or on the inside of the front fenders- somewhere you will find a riveted on tag, with stamped numbers and letters on it. This is the body tag - it contains all the colors, trim options, and accessories that were on the car when it was new.  To decode this information, you should contact the Buick Club of America at www.buickclub.org and ask them how to read the body tag for colors and accessories. They may have an online reference page which gives you that information.

The Buick club is a very good hobby club - I advise you to join them and attend some of their meetings and shows - you'll learn a lot, including where to get your car serviced in your area.
