Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1965 Ford Falcon- filling gas tank, gas filler pipe

Question
I just purchased a 65 ford falcon for my son. The gas fill is behind the car just above the licence plate. Because of the tough angle and the modern pumps he has a hard time filling tank without major spill over. Do they make any kind of pump attachment to help us?

Answer
No, sorry, many of us with old cars that have the gas filler in that location have to fight that problem.  Tell him not to try to run the nozzle at full delivery speed, and to tip it up so that gravity will help any loose gas to go down into the pipe.  It sometimes helps to pull the nozzle back out of the tank a few inches from totally seated in the filler pipe. He'll just have to experiment with the position of the nozzle until he learns how to position it to avoid leakage and splash-back.

While this is a negative, there is a positive, in that you can fuel the car from either side - which means you can pick the shortest line at the gas station.  I have 3 1960s cars with that feature, and I've come to like it for that reason.
