Classic/Antique Car Repair: overdrive, overdrive, eBay

Question
QUESTION: i've got a 62 falcon ranchero with a 6 cyl and 3 speed trans and a 3:50 rear axle.  it really sings at 55.....what overdrive trans will bolt up to the 170ci ?

ANSWER: You'll have to find a complete overdrive/transmission setup - you can't add an overdrive to the standard transmission.

The correct one for your car is the Ford overdrive transmission that was optional for that year Fairlane.  The Ford number is C3OZ-7003G.  That was used in the Fairlane with the 170 and overdrive.  They didn't offer an overdrive in the Falcon, according to my books.

QUESTION: thanks for the help......do you have one or know of one ? :)

Answer
No, sorry, I don't have my shop anymore, and no access to parts suppliers.

I would post a "favorite search" on eBay using the key words Ford Overdrive, and search through the listings. Use the eBay alert system to let you know when a new item has been posted.

For instance, there is one running now at item number 200320100482 - from a salvage yard in Idaho.  These show up from time to time, just verify with the seller that it is the right one (the part number I gave you) and comes with all the control cables, governor, relays and wiring that is needed to do a conversion.

I see some on eBay now that are sold as complete changeover kits - but they are for other Fords.

Of course, if you live in an area where there are old car salvage yards, contact them - they may have a car so equipped that you could harvest everything you need off - that would be a way for you to learn how it all goes together.
