Classic/Antique Car Repair: 69 Camaro been sitting, 69 camaro, rubber hoses

Question
Sitting for 6 yrs. Tried running it around the block 3 yrs ago and ran terrible which I have to believe was from the car/gas sitting. There's about 2-3 gallons gas left in tank. If I just go out and fill with Sunoco 94 will mixed full tank be good enough to get the car running good again? Is there any additive that can be added to tank to help fix the possible gas problem when I do fill it up? Thanks!

Answer
You probably already know this, but you've done a couple of wrong things:

#1 is, always park a car for storage with a full tank- that reduces the amount of air in the tank, so the reactions don't take place so fast.

#2 is, you put the additive in BEFORE you park it, not after the trouble has started.  The additive you want is named STABIL, and the instructions are on the bottle.  This is sold at any auto parts store.

However, from where you are now, you can only try a couple of things.

Try a new, full tank of gas (octane rating doesn't matter) and buy a can of Techron Fuel System cleaner at your local auto parts place, and add it to the gas.   Then, try to get the car running, and if it will run, just keep it going until it cleans out the fuel passages and the carburetor, if it will.   I don't know what your chances are, it depends on what kind of weather the car lives in, for one thing, but if this doesn't get it going good again, you are probably going to have to have the carburetor rebuilt, and even if it does get it going again, you should replace all the rubber hoses in the fuel system, from the tank to the carburetor, because the older rubber cannot stand up to modern fuels.  Use only SAE Spec 30R11 hose - it's expensive, but it lasts.

Once you get it running good again, be sure to fill the tank and add STABIL before you store it next time.

Good luck!
