Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1941 Plymouth Coupe, plymouth coupe, 7 digits

Question
I'm looking at getting a 1941 Plymouth Coupe. I have searched the vin the owner gave me everywhere and can't find anything out about it. The vin is P1126125. He said it's a business coupe and has no back seat, heater, or radio and it doesn't appear there ever was. Any info would be awesome! Thanks,
Kevin.

Answer
P11 is the model number for the DeLuxe and Standard cars - so that is correct for the business coupe.  The more expensive models were P12s, and are called "Special DeLuxe".  The difference is minor - they are basically the same cars except for a few trim items and and standard features.

According to my reference books, the VIN should have either 8 or 7 digits AFTER the P11, so I think there is something odd about the VIN.  The cars made in Detroit have VINs that start P11-15000101 and go up from there, and the cars made in LA start with P11-3121501 and go up from there.  You should be able to find this number inside the right front door, on the body pillar.  You have to open the door to find the number.

Most business coupes came with zero accessories, so this car is pretty typical.  They did not have a back seat - that area was for merchandise.  This was the lowest cost Plymouth one could buy. The factory price was $720.  The car weighs 2809 lbs.  The engine has 201 Cu In, and 87 HP.  There were 23754 of this model made.

In my opinion, the 41 Plymouth was one of the best looking pre-war cars made, and it is a rock solid design - one you can drive for many years - simple to work on, reliable, and comfortable (and that engine sound is unique and very nice).

Good luck with it!
