Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1956 Cadillac Brakes, radiator cap, silicone spray

Question
When I press the pedal down it does not release to the top all the way, Does that sound like the master or the booster? Could it be bleeding or adjusting? Ive done it all to no avail.. Any clues...

Answer
Hi Jeff:
On a 56 Caddy, the master cylinder and brake release works from a vacuum from the engine. If the engine is losing compression, it won't release the pedal complete. A lost of vacuum compression could be your problem. This is usually cause from something as simple as a faulty radiator cap or as major as head gaskets.

Try two things...

1. Check the vacuum hose from the engine to the master cylinder and if no leaks or obstructions, replace the radiator cap. Otherwise replace the vacuum hose.

2. If the above does not fix the problem, you most likely have a bad booster or master cylinder, but you should get a brake light warning when you apply the brake. If not, the brake pedal linkage could be sticking. A little silicone spray may fix that.
