Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1971 ford f-100 w/302 idling bad, ford f 100, vacuum leaks

Question
when i start the truck, i have to keep pressing the gas to keep it running, cant just press the gas cause it still idle itself down, do i need a new carb, or have someone adjust this one?

Answer
Tim,
Sorry, I have no easy answer because there are many things which can cause idle problems:

- Vacuum leaks/bad seals
- Clogged jets
- Misadjustment
- Stuck choke
- Bad timing
- Bad compression
- Bad plugs/wires

I would first look for the easy stuff, like a vacuum hose leak or a stuck choke.  Otherwise, it might be best to just do a tuneup, then check compression, then rebuild the carburetor if required.
