Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1961 Ford Country Sedan, chrome bezel, ford country

Question
How do you remove an ignition switch from a 1961 Ford Country Sedan without the key. I want to get the key replaced. Will the new key fit the tailgate and doors too?

Answer
When the car was new, the door and ignition keys were one number, and the tailgate (trunk on a sedan) and glove box lock keys were a different number (if it has a lock on the glove box - not every trim level did). To make it clear; the ignition/door key was different from the glovebox/tailgate key.  This was done to keep parking lot attendants or valets from getting into your glove box or trunk (on a sedan).

However, you can have a locksmith make all the keys match if you want - they can make new keys and change the lock cylinders so that they all match, then you'll have one key for everything.

To remove the ignition switch, you have to unscrew the chrome bezel around the keyhole - this is supposed to be done with a special tool, and since you won't have that, I suggest you take it to a locksmith to have it done.  It is possible to do this without the special tool, but usually this results in scratching up the bezel.
