Classic/Antique Car Repair: dieselengines, turbo diesel engine, oil flow

Question
how long should you idle the turbo diesel engine before shutting it down?

Answer
That depends on what the engine maker says in the owners manual. In my Detroit engined motor home, I figure that by the time that I get parked it is long enough. That is unless I have just rolled in off the highway into a road side rest area. Then I give it a minute or so. The thing that you want to happen is for the turbo impeller to stop turning before you shut the engine down and stop oil flow. Some will tell you that they want some of the high heat created by exhaust flowing through the turbo so that oil will not coke (turn to diamond like grit) in the turbo bearing. Check the owners manual.
