Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1955 Pontiac engine code number, pontiac oakland club, pontiac engine

Question
I can not find the block casting number or code number on my 287 V8 Strato Streak engine. Please can you help me?

Answer
The engine number is stamped (not cast) on a machined surface of the block, on the forward face of the block on the passenger side, just below the parting line between the head casting and the block.

It should start with either A, C, F, K, L, P, T, or W (depending on which plant the car was made in) followed by 755 or 855, depending on which model car you have, and followed by either H or S depending on which transmission you have, followed by a sequence number starting with 1001.  The same number should be on the VIN tag that is on the driver's door hinge pillar.

I'll give you my guess on the block casting number:  I believe it  should start with 52036 plus one more digit, which depends on which pistons it has (flat or recessed), and will be on the side of the block above the pan rail.   No books that I have available tell me about casting numbers.  If you are a member of the Pontiac-Oakland club (POCI), I'm sure someone there can help you.
