Classic/Antique Car Repair: vin number, good luck jack, chevrolet fleetmaster

Question
Regarding a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster vin number.  I have looked everywhere for the number.  The book said it was under
the floormat of the passenger front seat, however it was not there.  I have looked everywhere I could think of-cannot find it.  Can you help me?

Answer
They did not use vin numbers back then, but they did put motor numbers on and body numbers.  Look on the side of the engine and transmission.  Look under the hood for some faint numbers punched into the sheet metal.  If there is a cowl seal at the base of the windshield, but under the hood, look under there.  Your car was identified on the engine and body.  You just have to find it.
Find a chevy car club and ask them.
Sorry I can't be of much help.
