Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1966 ford mustang cooling system, over heating 289

Question
Hi. I have a 1966 289 ford mustang coupe. The problem i have or  concern is that when my car is warmed up the temp guage needle is reading hot all the time. Where should the needle normaly  be.I also have a water whooshing noise which seems to come from the passanger foot well could this be related

Answer
the needle should be close to the bottom or no more than half way up the gauge. Replace the thermostat in the intake manifold first, if the problem persists you may need radiator repair or replacement. As for the water wooshing noise, Id say your heater core is going out. Drive the car around the block then look under the passenger side floorboard for water leaking. Also check the carpet inside for dampness. If its wet, have the heater core replaced ASAP. That will fix the problem
