Classic/Antique Car Repair: 58 Rambler stalls when accelerating, fuel tank, back roads

Question
I just bought a 1958 Rambler Cross Country Custom 10 station wagon. (6 cylinder) It starts fine, idles fine (however, sometimes the choke sticks), drives fine.... but if I come to a stop, then try accelerate normally, the car will die. It always starts back up again without a problem. I can keep the engine going (after stopping) only if I accelerate v-e-r-y slowly, but that isn't practical driving for most urban areas. People aren't that patient!

I put an additive in the fuel tank to clean the carburetor thinking that may be the problem.  When I bought the car the fuel tank was almost empty, and I'm not sure how long it was sitting that way.  However, when I CAN keep the engine going (with my slow accelerating method), the car seems to be running fine.  I took it on a well planned route out in the back roads to try to get things running normal, but the problem still persists.  I'd appreciate any direction you can point me to.
Thanks for your consideration,
Steve

Answer
Sounds like the accellerator pump (small item inside carb) is out. They tend to dry out when car sits for a while.

If you are mechanical, you could probably change this yourself. If not, it is part of a standard carb rebuild. Your biggest problem is going to be locating one.
