Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1930 Model A pickup, hagerty, car club

Question
I would like to find out the recommended oil to use on my truck.  We inherited it last year from our grandfather, and I want to change the oil.  I was guessing 30W, but I have seen some people recommending 20/50W

Answer
Be sure to have fun with your new truck.  The A engine really does not care what oil you put into it, as long as you change it every 500 miles.  There is a lot of talk on what to use, but the bottom line is, 30 wt is fine.  If it is an old neglected engine that never got the oil changed, then there might be sluge in it.  Detergent oil might break up that sluge and move it around inside the engine. If it was taken care of, don't worry about sluge.  The main thing is to drive it often.  The more you drive it, the better if will run.  Now, find yourself a local model A car club and join it.  You will also have to join the national club, but none of this costs very much.  Also, check out ahooga.com on the net.  A lot of good stuff there.  Get the Model A mechanics hand book by Les Andrews.  About $35.00 and it will tell you how to fix most anything on your new truck.  You can get it through MARC of other places.  Get the red one, not the others.  I don't like the others, but the red book is great.
Get your insurance from Hagerty if you can.  Most of our members use them.  Drive it and have fun with it.
