Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1965 Plymouth Fury III automatic trans slipping, plymouth fury iii, automatic transmission repair

Question
Sir, My 65 Ply (113,000 miles) In low gear the car takes off great without slipping but when it shifts it slips in 3rd gear. if I let off the throttle it connects and then I can accelerate without the transmission slipping. Can this problem be cured by changing the trans fluid and filter or some type of an adjustment or do I need to install new parts somewhere?

Answer
These transmissions usually last much further than that without problems, but perform the normal maintenance on it to see if that improves the situation. Specifically, do the band and linkage adjustments, and change the fluid and clean the inlet screen.  Refill it with Dexron/Mercon III using the procedure in the shop manual.  If you don't have the shop manual, it's time to get one.  Any of the automotive literature dealers can sell you one.  I use Ed Faxon at www.faxonautolit.com, but there are many others.

If that doesn't help, you will have to take it to an automatic transmission repair shop.  Avoid the nationwide chains that advertise on TV.  Try to find a privately owned shop that has been in business for at least 30 years, and is staffed with old, gray haired mechanics who have grease under their fingernails and a surly attitude - those are the guys who will fix it without taking you for a ride, so to speak!
