Classic/Antique Car Repair: wheel size, fender tag, rear fenders

Question
I have a plain old 1969 dart.  I can not find the tire/wheel size anywhere.  The fender tag has only 2 lines.  It is a 2 door, 273 cid engine, 904 automatic.  The current tires and rims are: 185,80,13.
They look awfully small.

Answer
13 inch wheels are correct. They are 13 inch rim diameter, and 4.5 inch wide at the bead seats.  The original tires were 700-13 bias ply.  You could perhaps find a set of 14 inch wheels for it, they were used on the cars with AC, but you'd have to be very careful to make sure that they would fit in the rear fenders, and not rub on the front fenders in a turn.  Probably the stock 14" wheels would be OK in that respect.

The only place to find those wheels would be in a junkyard that has old cars - try DVAP in Phoenix.  You'd also have to get new wheel covers or hub caps.

If you stick with the original wheels, and want to run radial tires like the ones you have on it now, you are going to have to be very careful about putting larger tires on the rims - again because of clearance problems.  If the 185/80R13s are OK, I'd stick with them.   185s are almost an inch wider than the originals, so that is probably the maximum  size you can run - but check the clearances and you decide.
