Answer
Hi Michael:
Chances are your problem is not with the radiator. If you are getting push back in the overflow tank and hose, this mean you've got a leak in the head gaskets. Since this is an 85, the question is "how bad is the overflow"? A few ounce or a lot? If a few ounces, then the leak isn't too bad yet. If a lot, you have three choices.

Also, check the exhaust, if she is blowing a lot of white smoke, you will most likely need the head gaskets replacement. However, if she is just dumping a little water/anti-freeze when you park her, this is a minor issue and option #1 or #3 below could solve it.

1. Drive her more often (if she isn't drive regualrly) some times this will seal the gasket from the heat of the engine. If you haven't driven her very much, the gaskets will sometimes leak a bit. If she leak just a bit a little regular driving may fix the problem. Don't gun her.

2. Have the head gaskets replaced. If the engine is in good, low miles condition, you make want to just replace them. Make sure you clean and sand (if necessary) the heads before putting on new gaskets. This can get very expensive and time consuming.

3. Use a leak sealant that wedges metal particals between the gaps and seal it for you. Of course using this method depending on the current condition of the engine. If it is old with lots of miles, this may be the best options. However, if the engine is low miles and you plan to run it for many years to come, replacing the head gaskets may be best.

If you are considering option # 2, try Steelseal. See website below. This stuff is good, but you must follow directions to get the best results. Or you can find a shop that will do the treatment for you.
