I HAVE A 1974 CHEVY NOVA  WHEN I COME TO A STOP THE GENERATOR LIGHT COMES ON  WHEN I STEP ON THE GAS TO GO  THE LIGHT GOES OFF  ANY IDEA'S ?

Your problem is caused by a lose fan belt. Tighten up the belt a bit and the problem should disappear. When the car is idling, the belt isn't turning enough to keep the generator charging the battery as it should. Also, if the belt appears to already be tight, then you may need to increase the idle speed to get rid of the problem.
