Classic/Antique Car Repair: anti freeze/ black spots, 1950 chevy fleetline, head gaskets

Question
hi vern,i have a 1950 chevy fleetline with a 235 .i had the head resurface due to anti freeze on the outside between head and valve cover all the way across the block i thought the head was warp which it was the shop inform me of.put it back on and it still has anti freeze coming out in the same place its just a little but it is there.the car also leaves black spots on the pavement from the exhaust is this related ? thanks for any advice.

Answer
Hi Dick:
First the black spots are water mixed with rich exhaust smoke. Having a little water coming from the exhaust is OK. I have to assume that you replaced the gaskets when you had the heads resurfaced. If not, this should have been done as well. Also, if you are only seeing a little antifreeze, that could indicate the heads have not swelled around the gasket yet. I suggest you give her 50 miles or so to heat the engine to a point where the heat will seal the head gaskets. This should solve your problem.
