Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1939 packard, question thanks, quailty

QUESTION: Hi, I've resently acquired a 1939 packard. it was stored in a garage for the past 35 years. it looks like it's in excellent shape. I have a guy who retores 1960's and new cars who would like to help. Should i let him. I don't know a lot about this. Can you help ?     -----kevin

ANSWER: I would always pick local over long distance even if a little quailty were lacking and I am not saying it is.

QUESTION: Thanks Tazz, i guess my biggest concern is.... Can he hurt the value if he doesn't understand how to restore this type of car. I've read where this car could be worth 6 figures and if that is the case maybe i should take it to someone who's done it before. i don't mind spending the $ if it makes sense.         -----kevin

If you are looking for that type of redo then definitely not. Find a "classic car only" shop and GET REFERENCES. Ask to see what some of their jobs have sold for. I don't currently know of any to recommend, but the major car clubs will have several.

Be sure to see their work and what it has sold for. Also, get a time frame in your estimate. Some shops take over three years.
