Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1935 plymouth p6 acceleration problem, carburetor kits, hemmings motor news

Question
Hi Dick, got a problem w/ carburation--no gas spray when throttling, have to run car @ partial choke to get response; would like to find a new or rebuilt carb.--Ball&Ball brand is on it,(original I think), dont want to adapt throttle linkage for other type, or maybe they are all the same?? Do you have any leads on where to go to buy a rebuilt or new,or a rebuild kit w/instructions? I'm not very good on the computer looking for stuff..Thanks a lot.  Walt Lamont

Answer
If your symptom is hesitation when you first attempt to accelerate, the cause is a dried out cup on your accelerator pump (a part inside the carburetor).  If this is your only driving problem with the car, you certainly don't need to replace the carburetor, you only need to remove the accelerator pump and see if it can be lubricated with oil to rejuvenate it, or if not, replace it.  The carburetor does not have to be removed from the car to do this, only the top cover needs to be removed for access. Any experienced carburetor person will be familiar with this repair- or you can do it yourself.

To get the step by step instructions on how to do this, buy a rebuilding kit for your carburetor from any of the vendors who specialize in these parts. If you subscribe to Hemmings Motor news or other enthusiast magazines, I'm sure you have seen the ads for carburetor kits.  The kit will come with a new accelerator pump, so you can simply exchange it, but knowing how to rejuvenate them is a useful exercise also, as it happens repeatedly on cars that are not driven frequently.

One vendor who can probably supply you with the kit is Jon Hargrove's shop (called "The Carburetor Shop") in Eldon, Missouri.

You can find him (or anything else in the whole wide world!) by using your web browser to go to Google at http://www.google.com  and then typing in the name or description of what you are looking for.

For instance, I just did it by typing in "the carburetor shop" and got the following response:

http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/

Go to that web site and feast your eyes on everything they offer!
