Classic/Antique Car Repair: wiper transmission cables hook-up, transmission cables, motor shaft

Question
Hi there...I have a 1954 Pontiac that was restored about 4 years ago. I originally owned the car and when I ha it everything worked. But during the restoration, for some reason the knuckleheads disconnected the wiper transmission cables. I seem to remember them looping around the wiper motor shaft but really have no idea how to reconnect them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also looks like the passenger side line is off the pulley. Would I need to get another one or just try and get the cable back on its track?

Thanks

Answer
Hi, Ed.

The wiper cable arrangement in those cars is a nightmare to figure out, and to get the cables back on the pulleys if they have come off.  The last guys must have just given up on it.    I think you can probably figure it out by trial and error, but having another car to look at would help a lot.  I seem to remember that the cables loop around the center pulley about 3 times, to build up friction for good grip, and to build up the tension on the springs so the end pulleys don't slip.  If you have the factory shop manual for the car, it might give you some guidance, but most of them are not very clear.

If you are going to be keeping this car, I advise you to get the shop manual for it.  Many of the auto literature dealers will have one in stock - or they run on eBay frequently.   An original is best, because the photos are clearer, but some of the reproduction books are pretty good too.  I use Ed Faxon at www.faxonautolit.com - they usually have the best stuff.
