Classic/Antique Car Repair: chevy 1964, radiator flush, battery engine

Question
QUESTION: i have a chevy 1964 car been setting two 2 yrs motor a 327 . i purchase a new starter and a battery. engine rotates but will not start can you help

ANSWER: Hi Lenny:
Unfortunately, after setting for two years, there could be many things that are frozen or needs lubricating. The starter and battery are a good start. However, before trying to crank it too much, you should first replace ALL of the fluids. Oil, Transmission, Power Steering, Brakes and Radiator flush. This is very important so as not to damage any of the engine parts.

Now that you have the fluids replenished, you can now take a close look at two key areas that affect starting.

1. The fuel line, fuel pump, and carb.
2. The Points, Plugs and wires.

Check to make sure your plugs are not fouled. Replace if needed.
Check the Points and plug wires condition. Make sure yoy carb is getting gas. This should at least get you started up. How well it runs may depend on other things.

Also, if you are sure it ran two years ago before it was put up, this should help. Otherwise, the timing could be off or the belt/chain broken. If the car was broken for some other reason, let me know what you find in the areas above that I've mentioned, and get back to me.

ANSWER: Hi Lenny:
It sounds like the engine may be frozen. You should certainly change the plugs, clean the carb and replace all fluids and oil the linkage on the carb and any rusted motors that turn. Otherwise you may do more damage trying to crank it in its current condition.

Answer
Working on old cars requires lots of patient. But once you her your running right, you will look back on the experience and hopefully laugh about it. Just hang in there. Trying to bring an old car back to life after it has sat for that long, is not easy. Most people never bother to prepare a car for storage when they don't plan to drive it for a long period, but draining all fluids, disconnecting the battery, and putting the wheel up on blocks and covering her up or garage is the absolute best things to do for any car that will not be driven for more than 6 months.
