Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1968 camaro, rotor coil, 68 camaro

Question
QUESTION: HI, I ASKED YOU A QUESTION YESTERDAY ABOUT THE 68 CAMARO I CANT START. I TRIED WHAT TOU SAID AND THE GAS JUST SAT IN THE CARB. I ALSO PUT IN A NEW PCV VALVE. IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WANTS TO START HOWEVER IT WILL NOT. IF IT DOES FIRE UP ITS ROUGH AND NOT FOR LONG. I ALSO CLANED THE PLUGS AGIAN AND LET IT AIR OUT FOR A WHILE. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS?

ANSWER: Back off the all caps please.

Have you checked the timing and if each individual plug wire fire?

QUESTION: Yes, i checked all of the plags and they are sparking. Sorry about the caps. I work in archichitecture and everything we do is in all caps.

ANSWER: I don't recall your whole story. Has the motor had any major rework done? Cam replacement? Or is there a symptom you are leaving out?

Gas is there for a reason, but in can happen once without a major issue.

Go over the basics again. check for cracked dist cap, bad condenser,  etc.  There is something I'm not getting or you are leaving out.

QUESTION: To recap, i replaced the dist. cap, rotor, coil, balast resistor, pcv vale and plugs. The plugs are soaked in gas. I bought it on thurs. and it ran great. Fri. and Sat. it wouldnt start. I got it running after replacing said parts. it backfired 3 times then stopped. I havnt been able to start it since. It will fire up for about 30 sec. to a min. every so often but runs very rough the dies. I do not understand how to set the point gap so i havnt messed with it. There is fuel coming through the line. Im stumped and really need to get it started. The only thing I can think of is either the point gap is wrong, timing ching is gone or the carb is messed up. Im hoping its not the timing. I feel it could be the choke pulloff. What do you think?

Answer
Ok here we go, I'm up to speed.

Sounds like you jumped time, but let's check simpler things first.

Physically check the choke for operation. Is it open or closed when engine is cold and throttle is depressed once?  Does it stay closed until motor has ran a little while or open as soon as it starts or never?

You are going to have to check timing. Do you have a timing light. You can buy a cheap one much cheaper than you pay to have it checked.
