Classic/Antique Car Repair: electrical 61 ford, push button switch, starter solenoid

Question

How do I "polarize" a generator before re-installing on my '61 ford PU?(I have installed new brushes) I've heard this has to be done before it will work. Also, my ignition switch immediately cranks the starter in the on position,
even after splitting with an after-market push-button switch!! Any tips?  I know these electrical problems can run deep but everything else is working, lights, fan, turn signals, w/wipers, etc.          THANKS  rob.

Answer
There is no need to polarize the generator - it will be unaffected by replacing the brushes.

The starter solenoid must be wired wrong - double check your wiring from the ignition switch to the solenoid. I think you may have the two small terminals reversed.
