Classic/Antique Car Repair: My 68 Barracudas dying engine, beautiful beast, fan blades

Question
I have restored to original condition a 1968 Barracuda with a 318 engine. Just recently the car has begun to die in the middle of my drives. The car will be running fine without any problems, when it will just die at a stop. When I try to start the car again there is no battery power to turn over the starter. If I wait a few minutes, 5-10 usually, then the car will turn over again, but will not start straight up. I have no problems starting any other times, so I figure the engine just might be flooding. I have tried to adjust the idle to keep the enging running, but it does not seem to help. Please give me some ideas on fixes, I am so tired of pushing my beautiful beast down the street! Thank you, Bill

Answer
I'll try, but I need some more information.

When you attempt to restart after it dies, tell me exactly what happens.  Does the starter engage and begin to turn the engine (watch the fan blades) and then seem to be unable to keep the engine turning?  If this is what happens, do you hear any noise from the engine, especially a knocking sound?

If the starter does not seem to be doing anything - tell me if you hear a click when you twist the key.

Tell me if you have the original ignition system, or have you installed a modern electronic ignition such as Pertronix?

Smell your dipstick to see if you can detect any odor of gasoline in your crankcase.

Depending on your answers to these questions, I'll probably come up with some more questions- but keep on with me - we'll narrow it down.

Dick (also driving a 318, but mine is a later model -1981.)
