Classic/Antique Car Repair: Clutch removal, rear axle assembly, vibration problems

Question
I have a 1948 Mercury and need to replace the clutch. Do I need to remove the engine and Trans. from the car, or can the Trans. be remove from under the car. If so do I need to remove     the wish bone for the front axle? I have the care on a lift.
 Thanks for your help
Nick

Answer
You can remove the transmission from under the car, but you first have to remove the rear axle assembly, and then the floor boards so you can get at the bolts on top of the transmission.   Support the engine with a jack, with a block of wood to prevent damage to the underside of the engine.  Then disconnect the shift linkage and unbolt the transmission, disconnecting the clutch equalizer hardware as you go.  Be sure to mark the pressure plate where it bolts to the flywheel so you get it back in the same position, to avoid vibration problems.
