Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1954 Packard 359 engine, straight 8s, cam bearings

Question
Hello Dick,Years ago I bourght 2 new 359 engine blocks, how can I tell if they really are the 359 ? Will a 327 cast iron head fit on the 359 ?
When I get one running the other is for sale, what should I be asking for it ? Ole Blennov

Answer
Last question first - yes, a 327 head will fit - in fact it was the recommended replacement head for the original aluminum 359 head, which often developed problems if not carefully maintained with the right coolant.

To identify the block, first check the bore - it should be 3 9/16"  All other straight 8s from Packard are 3 1/2 inch bore.

Just to double check, take a look at the mains to make sure it is a 9 main bearing engine.

A new bare block, with no cam bearings, but with main bearing caps installed, is a valuable item, but I am not really sure how to price it - I guess I would just put it on eBay and let the market dynamics set the price.    If it has cam bearings installed, and they are in good condition, that adds a few dollars to the value, so be sure to mention that.

My guess is that it will bring at least $500 - maybe more.
