Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1957 Chev Powerglide, summit racing catalog, sorry boy

Question
Hi Dick.
I need a sevice manual for a 1957 chev powerglide.
I purchased a rebuild kit.I am ready for disassembly, but I would like to see the manual before I rebuild it.
Can you give me a source?
Thanks

Answer
The best source for this sort of thing that I have found is Ed Faxon at www.faxonautolit.com   If he doesn't have the powerglide manual, he will have the factory shop manual, which  also has the transmission rebuilding step by step procedure (I'm pretty sure - you could ask them to verify that), and it's a good idea to have the factory shop manual anyway, if you are going to be maintaining this car.

By the way, that is a HEAVVVVY transmission - if you don't have a very good tranny jack, rent one!  Don't make the mistake I made the first time I took one out of a car - you cannot lift it yourself, and if it lands on your chest, you'll be a very sorry boy for a long time afterward!

In case you are not aware, the racers are starting to use these for drag racing - you can buy all sorts of shift kits and heavy duty parts for these - check your latest issue of the Summit Racing catalog - you'll be amazed what is available now for a very old design.   (I'm not sure all the parts are for a cast iron one, though).

Good luck with it!

Dick
