Classic/Antique Car Repair: 48 Packard wont start, neg terminal, volt battery

Question
QUESTION: Hi Tazz, I may have made a mistake by giving in to the Battery Store guy who coerced me into buying a 8 volt battery as a replacement for my tired 6 volt battery. The car turned over and started like a champ!! I called my father who gave me the car last year and told him what a difference it made starting it now. Then I went back outside and the car was not running. :-(  Since then I have replaced the points, rotor, cap, and even ordered a new coil from Kanter Auto. Please note that the carb and fuel lines have just been replaced a month ago. Fuel is reaching the carb, but don't get the spark. I put a meter on the neg terminal of the coil and get 8 volts. Will you help?

ANSWER: Sounds like you fried the coil. Should have 1200-15000 volts on outlet of coil.

QUESTION: Well, I put back the old 6 volt battery and purchased another coil. Still no spark. Try again?

Answer
Ok but you don't say the reading on your coil this time.
Make sure you have a good ground.

You need to put an electric meter on the coil and have the points "break". This can be done by turning over the engine or physically opening them with say a screwdriver.

By the way, you don't address positive ground /negative ground. Has this been changed on this car? It is in a vague year model.
