Classic/Antique Car Repair: fuel or ignition?, well lit place, good eyesight

Question
I have a 1962 Impala with a stock 283 and 2 barrel carb.
My car doesn't want to idle, it will stumble a little (similiar to how it reacted to starting in cold temperature), when holding a steady speed with very little load it will stumble as well. Might you be able to point me in the right direction? Thank You.

Answer
With very little information, I'm reluctant to start guessing, but my first thought would be that the carburetor needs service.  Since I have had very poor luck with "professional" rebuilds on carburetors, I prefer to do the work myself.  Kits are available for your carburetor - and if you have good eyesight, a clean, well lit place to work and can read and follow the directions in the kit, I think you should get the kit and do it yourself. All you need is normal small hand tools (screwdrivers, small pliers), and some spray type carburetor cleaner (Gunk is a good brand), available at your auto parts store. Your symptoms sound like a collapsed accelerator pump diaphragm, and perhaps some debris in the low speed fuel passages in the throttle body - so be sure to spray the cleaner through EVERY tiny orifice in the castings to propel any crud out of the carburetor.

Good luck with it!
