Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1973 F100 Truck, piston rings, california stores

Question
My dad has a 1973 F100 truck and 2nd gear just went out and pouring oil in it every 30 miles. Does he another transmission or just rings? If so where do we find parts for it? He is mechanical incline so he could probably fix it.
thank you,
Amanda

Answer
I'll try to advise you, but I need more information.  Which engine does the truck have (there are about 8 different possibilities - 6 or V8, and many different sizes) and which transmission (3 speed manual, 4 speed manual, 3 speed with overdrive, automatic)?  What is he pouring oil into - the engine or the transmission? Is the oil leaking out, or is it just burning it.   If the engine is burning that much oil, there will be a large blue cloud of smoke behind the truck when it is running - and the cops will stop it and issue a "fix-it" ticket.

If it is the engine that is burning one quart of oil every 30 miles something is badly wrong inside the engine - for instance a broken piston. Just replacing the piston rings isn't going to fix that bad a problem - it needs a complete overhaul.  If it is just leaking that much oil out, it should be not too hard to find the leak by looking under the truck.

This is a new enough truck that any parts needed will be available from just about any parts store, so that isn't a problem.  NAPA stores will have the parts, and so will Auto-Zone, Kragen, CarQuest- depending on where you live - I only know the California stores, but most of those are everywhere.

If it has an automatic transmission, and that is where the oil is leaking out of, he should climb under it and see if he can tell where the oil is coming from.

Tell me what you can about these things in a "follow up question" and I'll try to figure out what you should do.
