Classic/Antique Car Repair: vin code, 1970 buick gs, sp engine

Question
I have a 1970 Buick GS 350-4 I was told it has the high compression (SP) engine but it does not have any badging on the air cleaner. The VIN on the block matches the car, but how do I know if the engine code is (SP)? I have all the paper work for the car BUT the window sticker has had coke or something sticky spilled on it and cannot be unfolded with out tearing please help. Thank you

Answer
The engine code (SB or SP) will be stamped on the left bank cylinder head.  The book does not specify where on the cylinder head it is stamped but my guess is that the code is right before the VIN stamping.  It is odd that you didn't see it when you found the VIN on the engine.  Try looking harder, is all I can suggest.   If you have the factory shop manual (I don't happen to have one for that year Buick), it should also tell you where to look for the code, and hopefully it will be a bit more specific.
