Classic/Antique Car Repair: opel ammeter flickering, jumper cables, 1970 opel gt

Question
I have a 1970 OPEL GT, 1.9 L, with an alternator, not a generator. When the engine is running, the ammeter needle on the dask flickers/vibrates. This increases as the RPM increases. This occure when the lights ar both on or off. When the lights are on, theall lights flicker also. But when I press on the brake pedal and the brake lights come on, the needle stops flickering, goes to the zero mark on the ammeter.

What is going on? Bad alternator, regulator ?

Answer
It seems like I say this to 20 people a day, but sounds like you have a bad ground in your system somewhere.

what I usually do is take regular jumper cables and put one clamp on the battery ground and run the other end around with a screwdriver clamped in it and ground things like the alternator, the motor, the light housings, until I find what will fix the problem.
