Classic/Antique Car Repair: carburetor, gp sorenson, cardboard tube

Question
I have a 1965 plymouth Fury with a 318 2 barrel Carter carburetor, and i was told the accelerator pump needs to be replaced.I bought a GP Sorenson rebuild kit(#96-223A). The directions say the pump piston must be lightly lubricated with clean engine oil, then flared before installation. What does flared mean, how do you do it ,and how much are you supposed to do it? Thanks, Bill

Answer
The accelerator pump probably was in a cardboard tube to protect it in the package. Flared simple means gently expand the open end of the piston after lubricating it so that it will contact the walls of the piston bore and pump fuel when depressed. There is a spring behind the piston and it will apply pressure to the piston one you have flared it just enough to apply light pressure to the piston walls. Good Luck.
